What are the different types of Breast Capsulectomy?
There are three main types of capsulectomy: partial capsulectomy, total capsulectomy, and en bloc capsulectomy. The en bloc approach is considered the most extensive and protective method but also the most technically challenging and invasive. Each approach is selected based on the patient’s condition, surgical goals, and implant status.
Partial Capsulectomy
A partial capsulectomy removes only a portion of the scar tissue capsule around the breast implant. In some cases, the capsule is loosened rather than fully excised. This option is less invasive and is typically used to treat capsular contracture when the breast implant remains in place.
Total Capsulectomy
A total capsulectomy involves the complete removal of the scar tissue capsule, but the capsule is taken out in sections rather than as one intact piece. The implant is removed separately from the capsule. This technique is more thorough than a partial capsulectomy and is generally chosen when the implant is being removed and full capsule removal is required.
En Bloc Capsulectomy
An en bloc capsulectomy removes both the breast implant and the entire scar tissue capsule together, as a single unit, without cutting into the capsule. This approach is more invasive and technically demanding but is often preferred when minimizing potential exposure to the contents of the capsule is important, such as in patients with concerns about breast implant illness (BII) or implant rupture.

What to Expect During Capsulectomy Recovery
During recovery from a capsulectomy, you can expect some swelling, tightness, and limited mobility in the first 1 to 2 weeks. Most patients are able to return to light activity or work within 2 to 3 weeks, with gradual improvement in strength and comfort. Light walking is encouraged early on to support circulation, while more strenuous activity should be avoided for at least 4 to 6 weeks. Final results continue to develop over 6 to 12 months as swelling subsides and your body adjusts to its new shape. Your surgeon will provide detailed post-operative instructions and monitor your recovery through follow-up visits.

How do I know if I need a capsulectomy?
You may have capsular contracture if you notice firmness, tightness, or unusual changes in your breast around a breast implant. An evaluation is recommended if you notice any of these changes, as timely intervention can help prevent worsening contracture and address further complications.
What type of capsulectomy do I need?
It depends on your goals and implant status. Partial capsulectomy may be used to treat capsular contracture while keeping the implant, total capsulectomy fully removes the capsule, and en bloc removes the implant and capsule together. Will there be a scar?
Yes, but our surgeons will take special care to make the smallest incision in the crease of the breast so it will be hardly noticeable. Scarring typically fades over time with proper care. At Chicago Breast & Body, we offer post scar cream & laser scar treatments at our med spa.
How long do I need for recovery?
We recommend returning to work 10-14 days after surgery based on level of discomfort. Most patients return to light activity or work within 2 to 3 weeks. Full recovery and final results may take 6 to 12 months, depending on your body and how closely you follow post-op instructions.
Can I smoke or vape before my surgery?
Do not smoke, vape, or use any nicotine products for 6-8 weeks before and after all elective procedures unless specifically allowed by your surgeon. Smoking and using nicotine products reduces blood flow to the skin and can cause significant complications during healing.
Is this necessary for breast implant illness (BII)?
Removing implants and capsules can improve BII symptoms for some patients, but results vary. En bloc removal is often preferred when minimizing exposure to capsule contents is a concern. Your surgeon can guide the best approach for your symptoms.
