The amount used will vary depending on the size of the masseter muscle. Most patients will require 25-50 units of neuromodulators for each side initially, but the amount needed may diminish as the muscle weakens.

Neuromodulators typically last 3 to 4 months, so the treatment will have to be repeated as the muscle regains its strength. Once the muscle atrophies, the treatments may be spread out longer with some patients only requiring 2 or 3 sessions per year.

The weakening of the muscle from neuromodulators will take 5-14 days to take full effect. Once the muscle is less active, it usually takes 6 weeks or more before the muscle will shrink noticeably. Your physician should also evaluate you for any medical issues in which neuromodulators is contraindicated, such as myasthenia gravis or in patients who are pregnant or breast feeding.
