Lymphatic Drainage Massages Help Promote Healing Post Surgery

Recovery after plastic surgery is as important as your actual surgery. When you have surgery, you want to see immediate results and with most procedures it can take months up to a year for final results to appear. Your Chicago Breast & Body surgeon will provide post-operative instructions and a checklist for you to follow, which may also include lymphatic drainage massages, or MLD (Manual Lymphatic Drainage) if you had a mommy makeover, Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), tummy tuck or liposuction. The purpose of lymphatic massages is to accelerate your post-surgical recovery.
Our lymphatic drainage massage therapist offer convenient appointments at our downtown. To schedule, contact or call our office 312-846-1529.

Why is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) important after plastic surgery?

After your plastic surgery procedure, water retention, swelling, hematoma or lumpiness to the areas treated are normal right after your surgery. This post-surgical lymphedema is caused by inflammation and trauma from the cannula used to suck out the fat. The channels that are formed by the cannula become filled up with fluid and the tissue around you becomes swollen. Manual Lymph Massage helps you to move the fluid by gently pumping it back into the lymph vessels, reducing the swelling, retention of fluids and pain after the surgery. Without lymphatic massages, the inflammation can evolve into fibrosis (a permanent hardening of the tissue) or a seroma (pocket of serum). Dr. Truong, Dr. Lin and Dr. Vagotis recommend getting Lymph Drainage Massage Therapy after liposuction or other plastic surgery procedures to make sure you get the best possible results from your procedure.

What are the benefits of Getting Lymphatic drainage massages after surgery?

All surgery causes stress to the body. After any surgical procedure, the body experiences trauma – both physically and emotionally – that can decrease the pace of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic drainage massage is like coffee, it “wakes up” the lymphatic system and promotes healing.

Will Lymphatic drainage massages help with bruising?

Yes. Bruises are an accumulation of cellular debris and old red blood cells in the tissue. Lymphatic massages can significantly reduce healing time for bruises by cleansing the extracellular spaces where these substances are trapped.

Is Lymphatic Drainage a form of Deep massage?

No, a lymphatic massage is a very light treatment, though it may feel uncomfortable in the first week after the procedure because that area is quite sensitive. Lymphatic drainage massages is an effective way to reduce swelling, water retention and bruising. It is based on the scientific understanding of how the lymphatic system works, and is known as the Vodder Method. This method is used in medical centers all over the world to help patients with swelling, bruising and other water retention-related issues.

Even though it may seem like a deep massage, therapeutic massage or other type of massage may help the hardness of the area post-procedure, that's not the case. A deep massage is actually not advised after the procedure, as it makes it harder to drain lymph fluid and could potentially damage the surgery.

When should I get my first lymphatic drainage massage?

The sooner you start your drainage the better. We normally recommend having the first lymphatic drainage massage three (3) days after your surgery. Having a lymphatic drainage massage can drastically reduces the appearance of bruises, swelling, stiffness, burn shooting pain, scars, lumps, bums and soreness that often occurs after your procedure.

If it has been over a month since your procedure you can still get the smoothing benefits of MLD but you won’t get the same results as if you had your drainage within the first week of your surgery.

How often will I need Lymphatic Drainage Massages?

The first week we suggested one session daily or every other day, as it helps significantly with the inflammation and the elimination of fluids.  The second week, every other day, followed by maintenance one per month for the next 5-6 months for optimal results.

Do I need lymphatic drainage massages before my surgery?

Lymphatic drainage massages also provide benefits before your surgery. It helps to clean waste and toxins, viruses and bacteria which helps to avoid any kind of infections before the surgery. It also increases the production of lymphocytes which means more white blood cells which assists in healing cuts and damaged tissue. The number of recommended sessions depending on the area, procedure and your recovery process, since they differ for each person. If you're getting multiple procedures at the same time, you may need a bit more sessions. You can either pay for each session seperately or get a discount if you decide to get a package of 3 or more lymphatic massages.

Are there any risks to lymphatic drainage massages?

Lymphatic drainage massages are very safe. However, it is not recommended if you have blood clots, kidney failure, a heart condition, or an active infection.

What to expect during your lymphatic drainage massage session

  • Firstly, you need to complete your medical form, followed by an initial consultation with our massage therapist. During this consultation, your therapist will assess the surgery type and stage, any open drainages and bruises, and any inflammation so that they can determine the best way to perform the drainage.
  • As you will be quite weak during the first week, your therapist will help you to undress and get on the couch, making sure you are always fully covered with a towel.
  • The MLD is then performed on the front of the body, with only the area being worked on being exposed. Gentle, rotating, pumping motions will be applied with your therapist's hands.
  • Generally, the entire session is performed with you lying on your back, as the lymph nodes which need to be decongested are all located on the front of the body. Though, for some surgeries, your therapist may need you to turn side to side, sit up, or face down momentarily if it is safe for you to do so.
  • After the session, your therapist will help you to put your garment back on, and provide you with aftercare instructions.
