Breast reduction surgery is also known as a reduction mammaplasty is the surgical removal of excess fat, glandular tissue and skin to reduce the overall breast size. Women with disproportionately large breasts can undergo a breast reduction to resolve ongoing discomfort such as back and shoulder pain, recurring skin rashes and other physical or emotional issues related to having large breasts. Breast reduction surgery can greatly improve a woman’s quality of life with one of the highest satisfaction ratings.
What is a breast reduction (mammaplasty)?
Breast reduction is a procedure that involves removal of excess fats, skin and glandular tissue from the breast to create smaller and more streamlined breasts.
Men and women can equally seek breast reduction if they want their breasts to be proportional to the rest of their body or they want to get rid of problems brought about by too large of breasts such as pain on the back, shoulders or neck, or embarrassment.
The common method of breast reduction involves three incisions. The surgeon will remove the excess tissue; fat and skin, then shift the nipple and the areola to a higher position. The skin that was allocated right above the nipple is brought down and together to reshape your breasts.
Patients who have undergone this procedure for the last 24 months have raved about it and 97% of them gave it a ‘worth it’ rating.
After a breast reduction, you will look thinner and more youthful, your bras will fit more comfortably, your overall silhouette becomes more balanced, and most importantly, the physical or mental discomforts with having disproportionately large breasts will be eliminated once and for all!

BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY FAQ
Everything You Need To Know About Breast Reduction Surgery
Why should I get a breast reduction?
Get rid of discomfort from large breasts and enjoy your life!
Some common reasons for getting a breast reduction are:
- Your breast size causes discomfort such as back, neck and shoulder pain.
- Limitations in your physical activity.
- Frequent skin irritation or rashes due to your breast size.
- Your breast size is out of proportion to your body and you have difficulty finding clothing to fit.
Will my nipples get smaller with a breast reduction?
Yes your surgeon can change the size or your areola at the same time.
Many women choose to have their areolas resized as part of a breast reduction. Breast reduction changes the size and shape of the breasts. A breast reduction surgery can also lift the breast and your surgeon can change the size of the areola, as well as the size of the nipple itself.
Can I choose the size of my breast reduction?
The short answer is yes.
Yes, you should discuss the desired size of your breasts with your surgeon. During your consultation your surgeon will help you choose a size that is best suited to your body type. The breast size should be reasonable since removing too much tissue can cause you to be disproportionate in the opposite direction.
How is breast reduction surgery performed?
Breast reduction surgery typically takes about 3 hours, depending on the level of correction needed and the complexity of the procedure. If your breast reduction is being performed with other procedures, as in the case of a mommy makeover, the total time of your appointment may vary. Since breast reduction is most often performed as an outpatient procedure, you can expect to head home the same day as your surgery.
Is a breast reduction performed with general anesthesia?
Yes breast reductions are performed with general anesthesia.
Breast reduction surgery is best done under general anesthesia. A breast reduction is a surgical procedure that can take between 2-4 hours to perform. For your comfort and safety, general anesthesia is usually recommended. However, most breast lifts are still considered outpatient procedures and you should be able to go home the same day to recover at home.
Does health insurance cover breast reduction surgery?
Check with your insurance provider.
Every insurance plan is different and we recommend you call your insurance provider and ask whether they will cover your breast reduction surgery. Our practice does not accept health insurance or work directly with health insurance providers. Patients are responsible for submitting claims and working with their insurance provider.
How long does it take to recover from breast reduction surgery?
You'll need a week of downtime.
It’s normal to feel sore after your breast reduction. Your surgeon will provide you with post operative instructions and ask you to wear a special supportive bra to help you feel more comfortable. Most women take a few days off from work to rest, but you can resume your regular daily routine after that. Exercise and any activities that involve lifting the arms overhead should wait a bit longer.
As swelling dissipates, you’ll see your final results become more apparent over time. Breasts should look more petite and feel firmer, with proportionate and flattering areolae and nipples.
