Breast Capsulectomy Surgery

What is a Breast Capsulectomy?

Definition: A capsulectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the scar tissue capsule that forms around a breast implant.

What it does: Relieves pain or discomfort, improves breast shape and symmetry, and addresses complications such as capsular contracture or implant rupture.

What is a Capsulectomy?

If you are experiencing breast capsular contracture, discomfort, or changes in the shape of your breasts after breast implant surgery, a capsulectomy may be an appropriate treatment option. Capsulectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the scar tissue capsule that forms around a breast implant, helping to relieve pain and restore a more natural breast contour. This surgery is often performed to correct complications such as breast capsular contracture, implant rupture, or implant malposition.

At Chicago Breast & Body Aesthetics, our board-certified surgeons frequently combine capsulectomy with other breast procedures, including breast implant removal, breast implant replacement, mastopexy (breast lift), or breast reduction, to achieve the best functional and aesthetic results for each patient.

What are some signs you may need a capsulectomy?

You might have capsular contracture if your breast feels unusually firm or tight around an implant. Some common signs include:

  • Hardening of one or both breasts

  • Changes in breast shape or unevenness

  • Pain, tenderness, or discomfort

  • Limited movement or a feeling of tightness

A capsulectomy is usually considered when these issues cause noticeable pain, distortion, or implant problems. Our Chicago Breast and Body surgeons can confirm the diagnosis through an exam and, if needed, imaging. They’ll also determine whether a partial, total, or en bloc capsulectomy is the best approach for your situation.

It’s a good idea to schedule a consultation as soon as you notice any of these changes in your breast implant.

Breast Capsulectomy Benefits

  • Removes hardened or painful scar tissue surrounding the implant

  • Restores a softer, more natural breast shape and contour

  • Improves comfort and relieves symptoms caused by capsular contracture

  • Allows replacement of old or damaged implants if desired

  • Addresses complications such as implant rupture or leakage

  • Enhances overall breast symmetry and aesthetic outcome

What to Expect During Capulectomy Recovery

During recovery from lipoabdominoplasty, you can expect some swelling, tightness, and limited mobility in the first 1 to 2 weeks. Most patients are able to return to light activity or work within 2 to 3 weeks, with gradual improvement in strength and comfort. Light walking is encouraged early on to support circulation, while more strenuous activity should be avoided for at least 4 to 6 weeks. Compression garments are typically worn to help control swelling and support healing. Final results continue to develop over 3 to 6 months as swelling subsides and your body adjusts to its new shape. Your surgeon will provide detailed post-operative instructions and monitor your recovery through follow-up visits.

“The result of the surgery has given me a newfound confidence that I’ve never experienced before. I am so glad I decided to make this investment in myself."

Breast Capsulectomy Recovery Timeline

Most patients return to light activity or work within 1 to 2 weeks. Full recovery and final results may take 3 to 6 months, depending on your body, the extent of surgery, and adherence to post-operative instructions.

Here’s a general overview:

  • Week 1–2: Swelling, bruising, and breast tenderness; limited upper body movement
  • Week 3–4: Gradual return to light activity and work; continued use of supportive garments
  • Week 5–6: Resume most normal daily activities, with restrictions on heavy lifting or strenuous exercise
  • Month 3+: Swelling continues to resolve, breast shape improves, and results become more noticeable
  • Month 6-12: Final results are typically visible, with ongoing scar softening and healing

What are the different types of Breast Capsulectomy?

There are three main types of capsulectomy: partial capsulectomy, total capsulectomy, and en bloc capsulectomy. The en bloc approach is considered the most extensive and protective method but also the most technically challenging and invasive. Each approach is selected based on the patient’s condition, surgical goals, and implant status.

Partial Capsulectomy

A partial capsulectomy removes only a portion of the scar tissue capsule around the breast implant. In some cases, the capsule is loosened rather than fully excised. This option is less invasive and is typically used to treat capsular contracture when the breast implant remains in place.

Total Capsulectomy

A total capsulectomy involves the complete removal of the scar tissue capsule, but the capsule is taken out in sections rather than as one intact piece. The implant is removed separately from the capsule. This technique is more thorough than a partial capsulectomy and is generally chosen when the implant is being removed and full capsule removal is required.

En Bloc Capsulectomy

An en bloc capsulectomy removes both the breast implant and the entire scar tissue capsule together, as a single unit, without cutting into the capsule. This approach is more invasive and technically demanding but is often preferred when minimizing potential exposure to the contents of the capsule is important, such as in patients with concerns about breast implant illness (BII) or implant rupture.
