tummy tuck mythsThere is both myths and reality behind nearly every cosmetic procedure, and tummy tuck myths are no exception. Unfortunately, misconceptions about tummy tucks can steer some people in the wrong direction and prevent them from obtaining the flat, toned abdomen that the body contouring procedure can offer. Let’s dispel three persistent tummy tuck myths and get the facts.

1. A Tummy Tuck Helps You Lose Weight

This is perhaps the most stubborn of tummy tuck myths. A tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure. In fact, ideal candidates are people who are close to or at their target weight. A tummy tuck removes excess abdominal skin and can repair abdominal muscle for an overall improved abdominal contour, but it is not a substitute for weight loss.

2. Tummy Tucks Are Only for Women

Women make up a significant percentage of tummy tuck recipients each year, but the number of men getting the procedure is growing. It’s not just pregnancy that can impact how the stomach looks. Fluctuations in weight or the aging process may also cause loose skin or a pooch, and more and more men who want to boost their confidence and improve their appearance are investing in tummy tucks.

3. Liposuction Can Accomplish the Same Things a Tummy Tuck Can

Liposuction can complement a tummy tuck nicely. However, liposuction is a completely different surgery and can’t be used in place of a tummy tuck. Liposuction treats small areas of diet- and exercise-resistant fat, but only a tummy tuck can remove excess stomach skin and strengthen the abdominal wall.

Healthy men and women who are close to their ideal weight but who have loose abdominal skin or a protruding stomach may see excellent benefits from a tummy tuck.
