Questions About Breast Reduction
Am I a good candidate for breast reduction surgery?
You may be a good candidate if you have large, heavy breasts that cause pain in your neck, shoulders, or back. Many women also choose this surgery to feel more balanced, fit into clothes better, or improve confidence. Ideal candidates are in good health, non-smokers, and at a stable weight.
What happens during the procedure?
During breast reduction surgery, your surgeon removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to create a smaller, more lifted shape. The nipple and areola are usually repositioned higher on the breast for a natural look. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes about 2-4 hours, depending on your starting size and goals.
How many cup sizes can I go down, and do I get to choose my new size?
Most patients go down one to three cup sizes, but it depends on your body frame, breast composition, and personal goals. During your consultation, your surgeon will help determine a size that looks proportional and natural for your figure.
What kind of scars will I have, and where will they be located?
The most common incision patterns are around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease ("lollipop") or in an anchor shape. Scars fade over time and can often be hidden under clothing or swimwear. We use advanced scar-minimizing techniques to promote smooth healing.
Will my insurance cover the procedure, and what documentation is needed?
If your breast reduction is medically necessary - for example, to relieve back, neck, or shoulder pain - your insurance may cover part or all of the cost. Most insurance companies require documentation from your doctor showing symptoms and conservative treatments you've tried. Our team helps guide you through the process and provides all necessary photos and medical records for insurance review.
Will I still have feeling in my nipples after surgery?
Most patients keep normal nipple sensation, though temporary numbness or tingling is common during healing. Permanent loss of sensation is rare but can happen. Our surgeons use nerve-preserving techniques to protect feeling whenever possible.
What is the recovery like? How long until I can go back to normal activities?
Most people return to light activities and desk work after about 1 week. Strenuous exercise or heavy lifting should wait 4-6 weeks. Swelling and mild discomfort are normal and fade gradually. Following your post-op instructions closely helps ensure smooth healing.
Will I be in much pain after surgery, and how do you manage that pain?
Mild to moderate soreness is expected, especially in the first few days. We use long-acting local anesthetics during surgery and prescribe medication to keep you comfortable. Many patients say recovery is easier than they expected.
What are the main risks or complications?
As with any surgery, risks include bleeding, infection, poor scarring, or changes in nipple sensation. Choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon in an AAAHC-accredited facility greatly reduces these risks. Our surgeons have performed thousands of safe, successful breast reductions with consistently excellent outcomes.
Will I be able to breastfeed after breast reduction?
Some women can still breastfeed after breast reduction, but it depends on the surgical technique and how much tissue is removed. If you plan to have children in the future, let your surgeon know so the best approach can be used.
Do I get a breast lift along with the reduction?
Yes. A breast lift (mastopexy) is typically part of every breast reduction. The lift reshapes and repositions the breasts for a perkier, more youthful appearance.
Is it possible for breasts to be uneven afterward?
Every effort is made to ensure your breasts are even in size and shape. Minor differences can occur because all bodies are naturally asymmetric, but these are usually subtle and unnoticeable.
What should I do to prepare before the procedure, and are there restrictions afterward?
Before surgery, you’ll get full pre-op instructions that may include stopping certain medications and avoiding smoking or supplements that thin the blood. After surgery, you’ll wear a supportive surgical bra, avoid lifting heavy objects, and follow all post-care guidelines to help your breasts heal properly.
How much does the surgery cost if insurance doesn’t cover it?
If insurance does not apply, the cost of breast reduction at Chicago Breast & Body Aesthetics typically starts around $10,995 or more, depending on complexity, surgeon, and anesthesia fees. We offer transparent pricing and flexible financing to make surgery accessible.
