Questions About Breast Implant Removal
What are the most common reasons patients choose explant surgery?
Common reasons include implant rupture, capsular contracture, changes in lifestyle, discomfort, or a preference for a more natural look.
Should I have my breast implants removed, and is it safe?
You may decide to remove your implants if they've changed shape, hardened (capsular contracture), ruptured, or no longer fit your lifestyle. Some women also choose removal due to breast implant illness (BII) symptoms or personal preference for a more natural look. Implant removal is safe when performed by a board-certified surgeon in an AAAHC-accredited surgical facility, using modern techniques and anesthesia monitoring.
Will I need a breast lift at the same time as implant removal?
It depends on your breast tissue, skin elasticity, and how long you've had implants. Some women choose a breast lift during explant surgery to tighten and reshape the breasts after volume loss. Others may benefit from fat transfer for a softer, natural fullness. Your surgeon will evaluate your anatomy and recommend the best approach for your desired outcome.
What happens to my breast shape and size after the implants are removed?
After implant removal, your breasts will naturally be smaller and may appear deflated or saggy at first. Over time, most patients experience a "fluffing phase," where the tissue softens and fills out slightly. A lift or fat transfer to breasts can also help restore shape if desired.
Why do my breasts look uneven or heal differently after implant removal?
It's completely normal for your breasts to look or feel slightly different from each other after implant removal. Each side heals at its own pace, especially if one breast had more tissue removed or a different type of capsule. Some swelling or firmness may appear uneven for the first few weeks. Remember - even in nature, no two breasts are perfectly symmetrical. With time and healing, most differences become far less noticeable.
What kind of scars will I have after implant removal surgery?
Most incisions are made along your previous breast surgery scars, minimizing new marks. If a lift or capsulectomy is performed, additional small incisions may be required. Our surgeons use advanced closure and scar-care techniques to help your scars fade as much as possible.
I feel fluid moving in my chest after surgery, is that normal?
Yes, that’s normal and temporary. After implant removal, small amounts of air or fluid can become trapped in the old implant pocket, creating a “sloshing” sound or sensation. This usually resolves on its own within 2 to 4 weeks as your body naturally absorbs the fluid and the space heals. If the feeling lasts longer or you notice swelling, your surgical team at Chicago Breast & Body Aesthetics will evaluate it to make sure everything is healing as expected.
Is it normal to feel stiff, swollen, or bruised after implant removal?
Yes, stiffness, swelling, and bruising are all normal parts of healing after breast implant removal. Your skin, muscles, and tissues are adjusting as they recover. Mild discomfort is expected and can be managed with prescribed pain medication or muscle relaxants. If you have surgical drains, you may also feel some extra tenderness around those areas. Any sharp or persistent pain should be reported to Chicago Breast & Body Aesthetics right away so our team can make sure your recovery is progressing safely.
When can I return to work after breast implant removal?
Most patients feel ready to return to work about 7 to 10 days after surgery, depending on the type of work they do and how they feel during recovery. Light desk work is usually fine within the first week, while jobs that involve lifting or physical activity may require more time off. Your surgeon at Chicago Breast & Body Aesthetics will give you personalized guidance based on your healing progress to ensure a safe, comfortable return to your routine.
Do the implants have to be replaced every 10 years, or can I leave them in longer if there are no issues?
The 10-15 year replacement rule is a guideline, not a strict requirement. Many implants last longer without problems. However, if you notice changes in size, shape, or firmness, or if imaging shows a rupture, removal or replacement is recommended. Regular checkups and MRI or ultrasound screenings help ensure your implants remain safe.
What if I have ruptured implants?
If silicone has leaked or the implant has ruptured, your surgeon performs a total or en bloc capsulectomy to safely remove the implant, capsule, and any leaked material. The area is irrigated and cleaned to prevent complications and support healing.
