While a square jaw can be attractive on some faces, it is usually considered a “masculine” trait. In many cultures, especially Asian, the aesthetic ideal for a female face is more heart-shaped with a more oval and less angular jawline.
Some women are genetically pre-disposed to having heavier and stronger masseter muscles which are the jaw muscles responsible for closing and clenching the jaw. In some women, enlarged masseter muscles not only cause abnormally harsh and square jawlines, but may be an indication of a functional issue as well.
Abnormally enlarged masseter muscles may be the result of excessive chewing, teeth-grinding, or jaw-clenching due to stress or nervousness. Some women even experience soreness of the TMJ joint and headaches as a result of an overactive masseter.
Traditional jaw reduction is a very painful procedure that involves the shaving down or even breaking of the jaw bones and resection of the jaw muscles with a surgical procedure. Although the results can be dramatic, the procedure is not without risks and the recovery time can be significant.
A more novel approach to jaw reduction utilizes neuromodulators injections which act to weaken the masseter muscles and causes them to atrophy or shrink.
This procedure can be done in less than 10 minutes using a very fine needle with minimal or no pain. Since there is usually no bleeding or bruising, there is no down-time.
Patients can undergo this procedure during their lunch-time and return immediately to work.

How many units of neuromodulators are required?
The amount used will vary depending on the size of the masseter muscle. Most patients will require 25-50 units of neuromodulators for each side initially, but the amount needed may diminish as the muscle weakens.
How often do I have to do it?
neuromodulators typically lasts from 3 to 4 months, so the treatment will have to be repeated as the muscle regains its strength. Once the muscle atrophies, the treatments may be spread out longer with some patients only requiring the injections 2 or 3 times per year.
When will I see results?
The weakening of the muscle from neuromodulators will take 5-14 days to take full effect. Once the muscle is less active, it usually takes 6 weeks or more before the muscle will shrink noticeably. After multiple treatments, the muscle will continue to shrink and some clients will see additional improvement 6 months or a year out.
Are the results permanent?
neuromodulators is not permanent, and the treated muscle can return to normal after 3-4 months if left untreated. However there has been evidence that after multiple treatments there may be permanent changes in the masseter muscle and possibly the jaw bone where the muscle attaches.
Will my chewing be affected?
When injected correctly in the proper amounts and locations, the ability to chew should not be greatly affected. Your physician may ask you to abstain from chewing gum or eating chewy foods as this may affect your result.
Are there any bad side effects?
If done correctly by a physician who is trained to do the procedure, the risks are minimal. neuromodulators itself usually will have no negative side-effects. Your physician should also evaluate you for any medical issues in which neuromodulators is contraindicated, such as myasthenia gravis or in patients who are pregnant or breast feeding.
Why is the procedure more expensive here than in other countries where I’ve had it done?
In the U.S. there are only certain brands of injectables that are FDA-approved. Dr. Truong uses only neuromodulators made by Allergan and is the gold-standard product. The cost of genuine neuromodulators is very tightly controlled and patients should question the authenticity or concentrations of the product if it is offered for significantly less elsewhere.
Additionally, you should be assured that the physician injecting the neuromodulators is trained to do the procedure and should be very familiar with facial anatomy. You are paying for expertise as well as for the product itself.
