Get Rid of “Bat Wings” with an Arm Lift
Arm Lift surgery (brachioplasty) gets rid of the loose skin, or “bat wings,” that droop from the arm due to aging or weight loss.
Dealing with sagging upper arms can be difficult. Despite maintaining a healthy weight and committing to a focused exercise routine, excess skin in this area often persists due to the stubborn nature of the tissue.
Arm Lift Surgery Benefits
Weight fluctuations, heredity and aging can all impact the arms. Men and women who are interested in brachioplasty surgery, often want to eliminate loose skin. These “bat wings” can droop from the upper arm due to aging or following weight loss. Loose tissue that hangs from the arms can cause you to feel self-conscious or embarrassed, or prevent you from wearing certain types of clothing or participating in activities. When diet and exercise can’t fix your cosmetic concerns, a brachioplasty can bring tone and contour back to your arms.

Book a ConsultationWhat is an arm lift brachioplasty?
An arm lift, also called a brachioplasty, is a surgery that removes extra skin and fat from the upper arms. It’s often done to improve the shape and appearance of the arms, especially if loose skin has developed from aging or weight loss.
The type of arm lift that’s best for you depends on how much loose skin or fat you have and where it’s located. Your surgeon will help you figure out your goals and recommend the option that will work best for your needs. If you want smoother, firmer arms, or you’re hoping to feel more comfortable in sleeveless clothing, an arm lift might be a good fit for you. Types of Arm Procedures
Arm Lift
A traditional arm lift or brachioplasty is the most common type of arm lift. It focuses on removing loose, sagging skin and extra fat from the upper arms, often caused by weight loss or aging.
Your surgeon makes an incision along the inside or back of the upper arm, from the armpit to the elbow, and removes the extra skin and fat to tighten the tissues, and closes your incision.
This procedure is best for if you have a lot of loose skin that extends from the armpit down to the elbow.
Extended Arm Lift
An extended arm lift addresses not only your upper arms but also the sides of your chest where you might have extra skin. Your surgeon will make a longer incision that starts in your armpit, goes down your arm, and extends to your chest. They’ll remove excess skin and fat from a larger area and contour your arm and chest for a smoother, more natural appearance.
If you’ve lost a significant amount of weight and have loose skin on both your arms and the sides of your chest, this could be the right choice for you.
Mini-Arm Lift
A mini-arm lift is a less invasive option that’s perfect if you have mild sagging or only a small amount of loose skin. Your surgeon will make a smaller incision, usually hidden in your armpit. They’ll remove less skin and fat, focusing on tightening the upper part of your arm.
If you have a small amount of loose skin or fat and want a quicker recovery, this might be the perfect fit for you.

Arm Lift FAQs
am i a good candidate for an arm lift?
If the underside of your arms are saggy or have an excess of skin and fat, you’re a likely candidate for an arm lift. An arm lift removes excess skin, eliminates pockets of localized fat and reshapes the arms’ contours for a smoother, more toned appearance, often with the help of liposuction for fine-tuning. Ideal arm lift candidates are non-smokers who are in good health and have realistic expectations of the procedure.
how long does arm lift surgery take?
An arm lift takes between 2 to 4 hours, depending upon how extensive the surgery is. Each procedure is custom-tailored based upon your specific needs and aesthetic desires. People who’ve experienced major weight loss may require a more in-depth procedure. If you’re combining your arm lift with other body contouring procedures after major weight loss, the total time will be several hours. An arm lift is done on an outpatient basis, so you can go home after your procedure.
will an arm lift leave a bad scar?
As with any surgery, an arm lift will leave some amount of scarring. The size of the incision will depend upon the amount of skin laxity you have, however Dr. Lin and Dr. Truong take special care to make the incision as subtle as possible. With proper scar management, the incision can fade nicely over time. Many people find that the benefits of having attractive, re-contoured arms far outweigh the scar, which can often be concealed by clothing.
how long is the recovery for an arm lift?
Recovery is proportionate to how extensive the surgery is. During your recovery, it’s normal to experience some discomfort along with some swelling and bruising. The majority of swelling and bruising should resolve in 2 weeks. You’ll wear a compressive dressing for about a week following the surgery, to help reduce swelling. Most people are able to return to work within several days following an arm lift and can resume all normal activities, including heavy lifting and vigorous arm movement, at 6 weeks. Any pain can typically be managed with over-the-counter medication or an ice pack.
when will i see my final results?
You’ll notice an immediate improvement in the contours of your arms, with the final results becoming apparent within 2 to 3 months once all of the swelling has subsided. By this time, your arms will appear significantly slimmer and more toned. Maintaining a stable weight through a healthy lifestyle can help you enjoy long-lasting results. Your scar should continue to heal over the first year following your arm lift.
how much does an arm lift cost in chicago, illinois?
